TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE— LIGHT YAGAMI'S POTATO CHIP SCENE.

At the height of L’s investigation, we had a bit of some ice breaking humor.

This happens when L narrows down the location of the serial killing suspect, Kira to Light Yagami’s house. Of course, deep down, he believed his gut— Light was theone. He made the bad guys drop like flies. He is the one with the Death Note. All Detective L needs is cold, hard and conclusive evidence. 

In a bid to acquire “justice” by all means, he loads Light’s family home with bugs. Cameras working from different angles, mics to catch any incriminating audio; he makes sure to leave no stone unturned. 

Light, who’s been informed by his father that he has eyes on him, walks into his room with the chip bag containing the Death Note. He turns on his hidden television and dips his hand inside the bag. He scribbles the name of his “victim”, a criminal, and then to mask his action, he takes a chip out and says loudly,

“I’ll take a potato chip…..AND EAT IT!”

That was basically him saying in a humorous manner to L that “he could look all he wanted, but he wouldn’t get jack.”

Of course, the criminal died, and even if some Otaku argue that Light’s arrogant show only made L suspect him even more, this moment is still generally accepted as one of anime’s most memorable scenes. It’s used on the internet in a lot of memes today.
